Suminagashi – Japanese Floating Ink Printing Workshop

“Suminagashi” is the Japanese traditional art of marbling as ‘floating ink’. The marbling process uses richly pigmented Sumi ink that floats above the water, which makes it easy to manipulate and create different patterns. A meditative-like process, the fluidity of the ink allows participants to follow their inner minds and freely express themselves. Suminagashi is a collaboration between the artist and their natural environments.

This class is suitable for all age ranges and all skill levels are welcome.

Once this workshop is completed, students will have an understanding of the basic Suminagashi processes. Projects will be one layer of Suminagashi printed on Kozo paper and three to five designs/prints per person. Suminagashi print sizes from 9”x7” to 14”x 9” (maximum). Suminagashi could be used as an individual art piece, postcard, book cover, etc.
